Thirumana Porutham (also called Star Match or Nakshatra Porutham) compares the birth star and rasi of the couple across ten factors. Each porutham reflects a different area of married life.

How the match score works
Every porutham is rated and scored, then combined into a result out of 10:
- Uthamam (best) — 1 point
- Madhyamam (medium) — ½ point
- Adhamam (not favourable) — 0 points
The total gives an overall verdict: Excellent (6.5 and above), Good (4.5 and above), Average (3.0 and above), or Low below that.
Two factors are flagged separately because tradition treats them as serious even when the score is high: Rajju dosham (both partners in the same Rajju group) and Rasi 6/8 — shashtashtama (the rasis fall 6 and 8 from each other). When either is present, review it carefully with an astrologer.
Chevvai (Mars) dosham
Chevvai dosham is reckoned when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house counted from the Lagnam, the Moon or Venus. A dosham can also be cancelled (nivarthi) — for example by Jupiter’s aspect, Saturn’s association, or Mars in its own or exalted sign. One matching rule is enough to cancel it; the calculator lists every rule that applies.
For the couple, the match is considered compatible when both partners have an active Chevvai dosham (the two balance each other), when neither does, or when a dosham is present but cancelled. If only one partner has an active dosham, remedies (parihaaram) should be examined before proceeding.

What is Thirumana Porutham?
Thirumana Porutham is the traditional South-Indian method of checking marriage compatibility between a bride and groom using their birth star (nakshatra) and rasi. It evaluates ten poruthams covering health, temperament, progeny, harmony and longevity.
How many poruthams should match for marriage?
There is no fixed minimum, but a higher score indicates better compatibility. A verdict of Good or Excellent (4.5 or more out of 10) is generally considered favourable. The quality of individual poruthams matters as much as the count.
Is Rajju porutham the most important?
Rajju porutham relates to the couple’s longevity and is traditionally treated as the most critical of the ten. When both partners fall in the same Rajju group, it is flagged as Rajju dosham and should be reviewed carefully.
What if only one partner has Chevvai dosham?
First check whether it is cancelled — a cancelled dosham carries no weight, and the result shows each matching nivarthi rule. If one partner still has an active dosham and the other does not, the match is not automatically rejected, but remedies (parihaaram) should be examined.
What are papa samyam and dasa sandhi?
Papa samyam compares the weight of the malefic planets (Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu) in the two charts; tradition prefers the groom’s to be equal to or a little higher than the bride’s. Dasa sandhi checks that the two partners’ major planetary periods do not change at the same time. Both are covered in the free Tamil report.
