The 10 Poruthams explained

Thirumana Porutham (also called Star Match or Nakshatra Porutham) compares the birth star and rasi of the couple across ten factors. Each porutham reflects a different area of married life.

How the match score works

Every porutham is rated and scored, then combined into a result out of 10:

  • Uthamam (best) — 1 point
  • Madhyamam (medium) — ½ point
  • Adhamam (not favourable) — 0 points

The total score gives an overall verdict: Excellent (6.5 and above), Good (4.5 and above), Average (3.0 and above), or Low compatibility below that.

Two factors are highlighted separately because tradition treats them as serious even when the overall score is high: Rajju dosham (both partners in the same Rajju group) and Rasi 6/8 — shashtashtama (the rasis fall 6 and 8 from each other). When present, these should be examined carefully with an astrologer.

Chevvai (Mars) Dosham

Alongside the 10 poruthams, the calculator compares Chevvai (Mars) dosham for both partners. The match is considered compatible when both partners have Chevvai dosham, or when neither does. If only one partner has it, remedies (parihaaram) should be examined before proceeding.

How to use this calculator

Frequently asked questions

What is Thirumana Porutham?

Thirumana Porutham is the traditional South-Indian method of checking marriage compatibility between a bride and groom using their birth star (nakshatra) and rasi. It evaluates ten poruthams covering health, temperament, progeny, harmony and longevity.

How many poruthams should match for marriage?

There is no fixed minimum, but a higher score indicates better compatibility. A verdict of Good or Excellent (a score of 4.5 or more out of 10) is generally considered favourable. The quality of individual poruthams matters as much as the count.

Is Rajju porutham the most important?

Rajju porutham relates to the couple’s longevity and is traditionally treated as the most critical of the ten. When both partners fall in the same Rajju group, it is flagged as Rajju dosham and should be reviewed carefully.

What if only one partner has Chevvai dosham?

When only one partner has Chevvai (Mars) dosham, the match is not automatically rejected, but remedies (parihaaram) should be examined. The dosham is considered balanced when both partners have it or neither does.

Does this replace an astrologer?

No. This is a guidance tool based on standard Tamil panchangam rules and uses the birth star and rasi only. For a final marriage decision, consult a qualified astrologer who can review the full horoscope.
