What is Tamil Panchangam?

The word Panchangam (பஞ்சாங்கம்) comes from Sanskrit — Pancha (five) + Anga (limb). It is the traditional Hindu almanac that records five essential elements of a day based on the positions of the Sun and Moon. Tamil Panchangam follows the Thirukkanitha (astronomical calculation) system, which uses precise planetary mathematics rather than observation-based tables.

A Panchangam is consulted for choosing auspicious dates and times for important events such as weddings, naming ceremonies, housewarming, business launches, travel and religious rituals. It is an indispensable guide in Tamil culture.

ஐந்து அங்கங்கள்

The Five Elements of Panchangam

Each element measures a different astronomical cycle between the Sun and Moon, giving a complete picture of the day’s energy and quality.

☀️
Vara
வாரம்

The day of the week, each ruled by a planet. Sunday (Sun), Monday (Moon), Tuesday (Mars), Wednesday (Mercury), Thursday (Jupiter), Friday (Venus), Saturday (Saturn).

🌙
Tithi
திதி

The lunar day — the Moon’s angular separation from the Sun divided into 30 tithis. 15 tithis each in the waxing (Shukla) and waning (Krishna) fortnights.

Nakshatra
நட்சத்திரம்

The lunar mansion — the 27-star constellation the Moon occupies. Each Nakshatra spans 13°20′ of the zodiac and has a planetary lord and specific qualities.

♾️
Yoga
யோகம்

The auspicious combination — calculated by adding the sidereal longitudes of the Sun and Moon. There are 27 yogas ranging from highly auspicious to inauspicious.

📅
Karana
கரணம்

A half-tithi — each tithi is divided into two karanas. There are 11 karanas (4 fixed + 7 movable), each influencing the suitability of activities during its period.

நல்ல நேரம் & கால தோஷம்

Auspicious & Inauspicious Times

The Panchangam also determines specific periods within the day when activities should be undertaken or avoided, based on the day of the week and sunrise time.

✅ Auspicious Times
நல்ல நேரங்கள்
  • Nalla Neram / நல்ல நேரம்
Two favourable 1-hour slots each day, determined by Jupiter and Venus horas in the Chaldean planetary cycle. Ideal for beginning important activities.
  • Gowri Nalla Neram / கௌரி நல்ல நேரம்
Two additional auspicious periods from the traditional Gowri Panchangam tables. Widely used in Tamil households for daily auspicious starts.
⛔ Inauspicious Periods
கால தோஷங்கள்
  • Rahu Kalam / ராகு காலம்
A 90-minute period ruled by Rahu each day. Starting new ventures, travel or auspicious activities is traditionally avoided during this time.
  • Kuligai / குளிகை
An inauspicious period associated with Gulika, son of Saturn. Avoid signing agreements or beginning journeys during this window.
  • Emagandam / எமகண்டம்
A period associated with Yama (god of death). Considered highly inauspicious for new beginnings and auspicious ceremonies.
  • Sulam / சூலம்
An inauspicious direction that changes each day of the week. Remedy involves offering a specific substance before undertaking a journey in that direction.

Tamil Solar Calendar Months

The Tamil calendar is a solar sidereal calendar — the month is determined by the Sun’s entry into each zodiac sign (Rasi). A Tamil year has 12 months, each beginning when the Sun crosses into the next Rasi.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Tamil Panchangam.

Thirukkanitha Panchangam (also called Drik Ganitha) uses real-time astronomical calculations — the precise positions of the Sun and Moon computed mathematically. Vakiya Panchangam uses traditional fixed tables (vakias) that were accurate centuries ago but accumulate errors over time. Tamilcube uses Thirukkanitha for maximum accuracy.
Rahu Kalam is one of the eight equal parts of the daytime (sunrise to sunset). Since sunrise and sunset times vary by location and date, the exact clock time of Rahu Kalam is different everywhere. This is why you must enter your location for accurate timings — a time printed in a printed almanac for Chennai will not apply in Singapore or London.
Yes. The calculator works for any date — past, present or future. Simply type the desired date in the date field. This is useful for finding the Panchangam at the time of someone’s birth, for historical research, or for planning future auspicious events (muhurtham selection).
The Tamil calendar follows a 60-year cycle called the Samvatsara chakra. Each year has a unique name (e.g., Prabhava, Vibhava, Krodhee). The current Tamil year name is shown in the Tamil date bar above the Panchangam results. This cycle is shared across South Indian traditions and is calculated from the Tamil Shaka year using the formula: (Tamil year + 11) mod 60.
The Tamil month is determined by the sidereal (nirayana) longitude of the Sun. When the Sun enters a new zodiac sign (Rasi), a new Tamil month begins — this is called Surya Sankramana. The Tamil date number counts the days since the Sun entered the current Rasi. Unlike the Gregorian calendar, Tamil months do not have a fixed number of days — they range from about 29 to 32 days.
Sulam (சூலம், meaning “trident”) indicates an inauspicious direction for each day of the week. According to tradition, if you must travel in the Sulam direction, you should first offer the prescribed remedy (e.g., offer ghee on Sunday, milk on Monday) at your doorstep or a temple before departing. The Panchangam displays both the direction and the traditional remedy.
The five elements (Vara, Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana) and the Tamil date are the same worldwide for a given moment in time. However, time-based elements — Rahu Kalam, Kuligai, Emagandam, Nalla Neram and Gowri Nalla Neram — depend on the local sunrise and sunset, so they differ by location. Always select your specific city for accurate daily timings.
